YuYu Hot Water Bottle. YBLTV Review by Katie Hernandez.

Since my diagnosis with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome a year ago, I have attempted a variety of different pain management treatments in order to address the chronic pain associated with my condition. As many who are in the midst of this journey, pain management is often expensive, short-term, or risky – and sometimes a combination of the three. Those in the PCOS and Endometriosis communities are inundated with comments about Big Pharma, the benefits of yoga and acupuncture in our lives, and the need to smoke a few joints and embrace CBD oil as a cure all.

However, as many of your reading this may know, these options are not always legitimate options, particularly in the life of someone working full-time. Living with two parents who are also struggling with pain management in retirement, I had hoped there would be a better way to handle pain in a non-cumbersome and effective way. It was during this time that I came across the YuYu Hot Water Bottle.

If you are a part of the PCOS or Endo communities online, I’m sure you’ve come across YuYu in your research. Made of premium Sri Lankan rubber, the YuYu is the millennial answer to your mother’s hot water bottle. Instead of scalding yourself on rubber only to lose heat 30 minutes later, the YuYu bottle is a long, skinny rubber bottle designed with a series of convex bubbles molded into the shell. The line markets the bottles with a number of thick, protective covers to be used when applying heat to areas of pain. Affordable options start with cotton and fleece, and eventually work up to cashmere and wool as well (and the price points starting around $30 and going up towards $150 reflect the luxury increase).

During the beginning of my review period, I was excited but also curious as to this reinvention of the wheel – how could YuYu be any better than current water bottles, or the technology that has worked to replace them? Take, for example, Livia and its portable TENs unit designed to block pain gateways during menstruation. In theory, this would eliminate the need for the YuYu at all. However, once I heated my water and filled my bottle, I could see why YuYu was so firmly seated in the PCOS and Endo communities. Below are some of my main highlights.

1) Convex Bumps: As mentioned, the small bumps along the skinny bottle were confusing the first time I used the bottle. However, there are two reasons for their inclusion: the first is to allow the water to retain its heat for a longer period of time. While YuYu states that the rubber used in their bottles is some of the best for heat retention, the bubbles help to provide even heat preservation throughout its use, and to keep the water hotter for longer. The second reason is because the bubbles act almost as acupressure points, creating something of a gentle massage when used under body weight (behind shoulders, lower back, etc). While it is hard to feel the bottle when it is in the fleece sock, they feel very relaxing when the bottle is kept under a thin sheet. I would caution, however, to not take off the sock until the water is tolerable to the skin.

2) The Shape: The shape of the bottle is everything I have ever wanted in pain management. Because the bottle is long and skinny, it wraps perfectly around my waist and targets the pain more accurately than methods I’ve tried in the past, such as folding heating pads to fit a wider area. I’ve also had my parents use the bottle, and they’ve been able to use it around knees and on shoulders much more easily than heating pads (as those bunch up and have timers that turn off at night).

3) The Cover: I really enjoyed the fleece cover because of the soft material and the sturdiness of the fabric. Additionally, the bottles come with loops sewn into the tail ends to tie the bottle to your waist. I actually put on Christmas lights with the bottle, and while it did slip towards the end, I was able to walk around with it for about 30/35 minutes. If you’re a more petite person, you could probably utilize this option more effectively throughout the day.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of the cons listed, I still believe that YuYu lives up to the hype and is a valuable tool in chronic pain management. I consistently depend on his bottle during my period, and I know that if you are struggling to find non-pharmaceutical pain treatment, this product would be extremely beneficial for you.
