YBLTV Review – beyerdynamic Fox USB Microphone

In an era where everyone has a Fortnite team and podcasts are everywhere, microphones are ever-present. Microphones on headphones, on earbuds, even built in to TVs and home appliances. Though, those are ordinary microphones. These my friends, are not the FOX.

Professional FOX

Beyerdynamic FOX is a professional, USB studio microphone. 96 kHz frequency for use in professional recording studios, while a price tag that makes it reasonable for the basement musician’s studio aspirations.

When you first open the FOX packaging, you know the team at Beyerdynamic means business. An impressive foam padding holding everything in place. The FOX is the first affordable microphone I have seen that comes standard with a pop filter included.

Industrial Design

It is hard to argue with the build of this microphone, though. A no-nonsense design including volume, gain and a mute button right in front, along with a headphone jack for monitoring. You have everything you would need access to at a moment’s notice, with nothing pertinent buried behind panels.

“At the time of this review, I have reached out to one record label executive, and have others in mind, to recommend the FOX for,” – Patrick Mackey, @mackeyp42, YBLTV Writer / Reviewer

While it may be a minor detail to some users, I love the Fox-inspired orange USB cable included. Only three feet long, but it certainly stands out. At a moment’s notice you know which cable to grab if you’re going to an impromptu jam session at your buddies’ place.

The included stand is perfect for a podcast desk, while there is an included thumb screw so you could commandeer a guitar stand or mic without a problem. Microphones always seem so fragile to me, and while I have no intention of throwing this one, it looks like it could handle it. A basics-inspired design of a cylinder gives the FOX an appearance that inspires confidence. There’s no frivolous extensions or handles to get caught on. Plug it in, and broadcast what matters. More products should follow this design ethos.

Pushing From The Comfort Zone

Now, I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that my voice is something that is reserved for dark corners. The FOX had me pulling up YouTube and covering my personal favorite hits, if only to see how much better the artists are than myself. Harry Chapin to Dispatch, I had to try it. There were others I thought of, but I am certain that I cannot get my lips to move fast enough (I’m talking to you, Hamilton!)

Beyerdynamic

Beyerdynamic continues to impress with both their design and their dedication to quality. The FOX feels like a sturdy piece of equipment that will inspire you to take it, and yourself seriously.

Final Thoughts

If I were more of an avid podcaster, I would jump at the chance to have this on my rig. A solid mic that just screams to be nearby for any given recording opportunity. Personally though, I prefer a more behind-the-scenes approach. The guy making sure all the tech is set up and ready for the performers. That’s why I feel impressed at the design of this small, yet not unimportant piece of equipment. If you do any sort of recording and are on the hunt for a new recording device, do yourself a favor and look up the FOX. You’ll be glad you did. My only complaint would be their three foot USB cable, but if we’re honest, the standardized jacks mean that the cable can be replaced easily.

At the time of this review, I have reached out to one record label executive, and have others in mind, to recommend the FOX for.
