YBLTV Review: Coast HX3 UV Cliplight

Two AAA batteries and fits in the palm of your hand. The HX3 looks a bit alien when you first see it: A rectangle for the batteries with a swivel canister along the top. It’s only when you get your hands on it that the style really begins to unfold.

Coast HX3 Design

With its subdued T shape, you wonder if this is a flashlight or something you might find in a CIA spy kit. I’ve become so used to the ‘standard’ flashlight body shape, that this one confused me when I first got it.

The design allows for the battery case-portion of the body to be secured, and a rotating head to adjust to where you are looking. The team at Coast made sure to think of everything, too. A clip for things like the bill of a hat or a belt, an adhesive pad if you want to secure this to a workstation, and even magnets if you prefer to have it just hanging around when you don’t need it.

The button is a simple 3-way on/off switch, that I greatly appreciate. I’ve seen far too many that have flashing options and things, that you will wear the button out almost as fast as you wear the batteries out. The HX3 is all business. First click is the white light, second click is the UV inspection lamp, and third click is off.

“Whether checking currency or looking for antifreeze leaks, you will be glad you have that Coast HX3 UV light nearby. I know I am.” – Patrick Mackey, YBLTV Writer / Reviewer, @mackeyp42,

UV You Say

If you’ve not seen a UV light before, it takes you by surprise. Coast’s HX3 almost looks as if you forgot to turn the light on. It is very reminiscent of a black light, that way. Minimal illumination, until you come across something white or a vibrant neon color, then it’s lit up like a Christmas tree. Whether checking currency for security features or looking for antifreeze leaks, you will be glad you have that UV light nearby. I know I am.

Final Thoughts

When I heard that a UV flashlight was up for review, I jumped at the chance. I’ve been curious for some time to test its effectiveness, and it did not leave me disappointed. The HX3 has a battery life of near 4 hours, which for intermittent inspections and the random uses I have for it will feel like a lifetime. You can never have too many flashlights available. Who knows what sort of situation you will find yourself in. Or who’s money you may need to check.
