YBLTV Review & Giveaway: CreataDream Flower Fairies Secret Garden
Until very recently, I was unfamiliar with the concept of “Fairy Gardens.” I had no idea that such wonders existed, even for adults like myself. For a long while now I lied to myself, I told myself “you are an adult, act like it,” but what does that even mean?
Act like an adult, think like an adult, BE an adult? I lost touch with the person that meant the most to me… myself. Those childhood dreams of dragons, fairies, mermaids, everything I use to hold dear just faded in the last few years.
So one day, I decided I need to pick myself up, I said, ” Why not me? Why can’t I be an adult my way and love what I love?” I decided I needed to reignite the flame that was my lost child. In doing so, I tried to surround myself with all things fantasy-like, or at least introduce them back into my life. I took up reading Fairy magazines, joining fairy inspired social media groups (many which introduced me to the concept of fairy gardens), even immersing myself in fairy inspired spa treatments (homemade of course).
None of that even compares to the fact that one day, I was lucky enough to be granted the honor of reviewing CreataDream Flower Fairies Secret Garden. Nothing gave me greater joy than to relight the fire that was my childhood love. Silly as it may be, I became consumed with creating my garden: adding the flowers, placing the figurines even adding to the design of the garden flower pot.
Most don’t anticipate a childless, 26 year old female to be enthralled with, well, toys. I see so much more from this garden than meets the eye. It has meaning, inspiration, a flame that brings light into the dark. I find myself more creative, I want to do more, be more, design, paint and create more.
Doing some research into the background behind these fairies I have found, all the fairies in the collection are based on Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies™ books. Cicely Mary Barker as an ADULT painted and wrote wonderful stories depicting fairies (mainly due to fairy-crazed Victorian era, BUT STILL). She found inspiration completely from nature herself. The fairies were all created using children in her sister’s kindergarten class as well as the servants in their house as inspiration for the design elements. Cicely Barker even went as far as to physically build the dresses she used to make sure her drawings and paintings were as accurate as possible. I could not be more inspired by any human being so real, someone I can relate to on such a level. Granted it did not take up her entire life, but it made up a good portion of what made her a fantasy artist and who she was as a person. I just absolutely fell in love with CreataDream Flower Fairies Secret Garden and Cicley Mary Barker’s work, so what else can I say?

YBLTV: We understand that at one point in your career you worked on McDonald’s Happy Meals… Tell us about that experience and how you got to where you are now with CreataDream.
CreataDream: I was very fortunate to start my toy career designing Happy Meal toys and it was a natural fit to move into designing retail toys for kids. As an engineer and designer for the kids market, I just always keep an eye on the market trends and possible new opportunities for kids and what parents might like for their kids. I saw the miniature garden category growing and really nothing specifically designed for kids or major licenses being used. Miniature Garden is a fun craft project for every age and saw an opportunity for kids and families to get involved.
YBLTV: How does an artist go about getting the licensing rights to another work of art? What kinds of things have you learned with your journey into the world of licensing?
CreataDream: You just need to do some research on who owns the property and get into contact with the right people to discuss if they are open to licensing and sharing your ideas with them to see if its a good fit with their brand. Then a contract is needed to be negotiated to protect both parties.
YBLTV: What inspired you to create the Flower Fairies figurines based on Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies™ books?
CreataDream: I knew there was a great opportunity to design a miniature gardening brand for kids, but it’s very difficult to sell to kids with an unknown or new brand. Kids like to have a character name and who they are and what they do. I was originally looking at writing our own story and new names for characters but that takes a lot of work for marketing. I found the Flower Fairies books and it was just a fantastic natural fit. Cicely Mary Barker was a very talented water color artist and used real children for her artwork creations. She wrote a poem for each one and there’s 170 to choose from. Each Flower Fairy is based on a real flower, tree or herb and her books talk about how everyone can look for real Flower Fairies in your gardens.
YBLTV: Which one of the fairies are you most inspired by and why?
CreataDream: Well, I really love them all but Daisy and Scilla was my first prototype models to do more research with kids and sell into Penguin licensing for the idea. We have a remarkable design and sculpting staff that can replicate realistic looks of people and products. Just look at one of the fairies and you can see we captured a realistic look of the characters in our product line. The unique way we paint our faces and outfits really capture the water color art she did.
YBLTV: What would your ideal fairy garden look like?
CreataDream: Very large and have many flowers and tree nooks and crannies to look into and find a Flower Fairy. Filled with pathways, bridges and small accessories to imagine a Flower Fairies garden tea party or ball they have planned. Many scenes showing how much fun Flower Fairies have in the garden! I would also place in UV Black light spot lights because you know the Flower Fairies wings are very special and glow in the sunshine or with the help of UV light. Its very magical and is great to have a nighttime garden!
YBLTV: Do you believe in fairies?
CreataDream: Yes I do! It’s hard not to when you read the stories. Please check out the “How to find Flower Fairies”, “Girls Book of Flower Fairies” or the “Magical Secret Garden” books by Cicely Mary Barker. You will then too, believe!
