WASHINGTON, D.C. – NAB Show will feature a panel discussion on the role local broadcasters played during the tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas in the fall of 2017. The session, titled “Crisis on the Strip: Reporting in an Unfolding Emergency,” will be held Tuesday, April 10 in North Hall N256 at 1:30 p.m.
On the night of October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire on concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip, leaving 58 people dead and hundreds more injured in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The panel discussion will examine how Las Vegas broadcasters worked with first responders to provide accurate emergency information to the public. Panelists will also discuss how local law enforcement and broadcasters can prepare for and improve cooperation during breaking news events.
“Local broadcasters fully embrace our responsibility as ‘first informers’ during times of crisis, partnering with first responders to provide critical information that keep the public out of harm’s way,” said NAB Executive Vice President of Communications Dennis Wharton. “This panel offers broadcasters the chance to hear firsthand the critical lessons learned from this tragedy and how we can adapt to best serve our communities.”
