YBLTV Review & Giveaway: OWC SoftRAID

Question: Have you ever used your computer only to have it die on you? Then to find out it was caused by the hard drive dying on you? If you answered yes to both then boy do I have a solution for you.

Beyond sounding like the annoying infomercial host, I actually recently did find a solution that helped me. As someone who works in the audio industry, I am using my computer all the time. I am using a custom built 2012 Mac Pro Tower. Four hard drives, all together making fourteen terabytes of hard drive space. Two large hard drives are split to six terabytes each and two others at one terabyte each. As having my computer spread across multiple hard drives means that I am faced with the chances of hard drive failure everyday. Several times I have had the dilemma of having a hard drive fail on me in the middle of work.

Recently, I was asked to review software by OWC Holdings, Inc., a division of OWC, designed to check hard drives for possible failures in the future. I installed the OWC SoftRAID software and it’s amazing how great it works. I opened the software after install and see a visualization of the hard drives in my computer. Below each picture of the hard drive is a status on the condition of the hard drive. This came in handy when SoftRAID notified me that one of my hard drives was close to the point of failure. I backed up the hard drive and continued to run on the same failing hard drive to test how accurate the software actually is. The next day the hard drive physically failed to the point of removal and scrap. Without SoftRAID’s notification, I would not have backed up the info on this hard drive and most importantly, I definitely would have lost all the info on the hard drive. SoftRAID literally saved my stored information from loss.

“Instead of worrying about the possibility of hard drive failure, I can focus on my work with ease of mind knowing that in the background, OWC SoftRAID is checking my system,” - Jack X, YBLTV Writer / Reviewer

Another neat feature of SoftRAID is the ability to create different types of RAID drives. For those who do not understand what a RAID drive is: A RAID drive is multiples of two or more hard drives reformatted in a way that the computer recognizes these multiple hard drives as a single drive. SoftRAID has an easy RAID setup menu to help walk the user through creating a RAID setup on their own computer. No computer skills necessary, SoftRAID makes this feature easy to setup.

WARNING: BEFORE USING THE RAID SETUP MENU, BACK UP ALL HARD DRIVES INVOLVED IN CREATING THE RAID DRIVE. THE SOFTWARE WILL WIPE ALL INFO FROM THESE HARD DRIVES WHEN CREATING THE RAID SYSTEM.

RAID Drives are more associated with professional gamers and those who take their gaming seriously. RAID Drives are now moving into the pro audio and film markets as well. As using a RAID layout has one major upside, the computer can access RAID storage faster then non-RAID storage. Since both the pro audio and film markets are all about speed, this setup is becoming more and more popular.

Final Thoughts

OWC SoftRAID is definitely my choice when it comes to protecting the info on your computer from total loss. Now, instead of worrying about the possibility of hard drive failure, I can instead focus on my work with ease of mind that in the background SoftRAID is checking my system.
