Regardless of whether you’re a casual fan of emerging technologies or a hardcore VR aficionado, you’ll get great use out of a Samsung Gear VR headset. The future is here; but is the Samsung Gear VR the evidence? That depends entirely on your perspective.
- Cheap price point ($70-$99)

The Samsung Gear VR headset has been out for a year now, yet it feels fresh as ever. By almost all accounts, the fact that we have a device in our living rooms that allows us escape into a virtual world is still pretty remarkable.
Sure, the Gear VR isn’t in itself a standalone virtual reality experience. Your Samsung Galaxy device acts as the actual display and processor, while the headset itself functions more as the physical interface for the experience.
But for those of us with a smartphone that supports VR functionality (the Galaxy S, Note, and Edge series), there’s hardly an available excuse to not have a Gear VR to play with. The Netflix app alone makes it worth your while – lounging comfortably on your couch while under the impression that you’re sitting in a movie theater is something that simply must be experienced to be believed.
Yet even though the Gear VR is powered by Oculus technology, it is most certainly not the same thing as a complete Oculus device. You won’t have any truly AAA virtual reality experiences with this thing strapped to your face.
However, with a Stratus SteelSeries XL controller or similar, you can play a wide enough variety of games that function more or less as polished tech demos and proofs of concept. They’re equally fun and fascinating, and marvelously showcase the potential for the technology.
So, regardless of whether you’re a casual fan of emerging technologies or a hardcore VR aficionado, you’ll get great use out of a Samsung Gear VR headset.
The future is here; but is the Samsung Gear VR the evidence?
That depends entirely on your perspective.
I look forward to visiting the Samsung booth at CES 2017…
