Philips Commercial Signage Ushers a New Generation of Display Technology at DSE 2013

Custom Built Touch Table by U-Touch USA Allows for Multi-Collaboration

At Digital Signage Expo 2013, YBLTV spoke with Angad Chera, Marketing Manager for Philips Commercial Signage, North America who first introduced us to the custom built touch table by U-Touch USA featuring 20 point touch infrared technology.

Fifth generation infrared technology further enhances infrared’s traditional advantages providing high clarity, maintenance-free ruggedness. New breakthroughs also offer the ability to apply the technology in high ambient light environments. Infrared lends itself to a wide range of touch enabled applications including customer retail sites, information kiosks, gaming & leisure, and self-drive multimedia programs.

The U-Touch frame can be easily retrofitted over most of the leading brand LCD and Plasma panels, as well as applied to custom kiosk fit outs. Furthermore, the protective glass layer can provide a splash proof interface for the most demanding of public areas. We can cater for IP65 rated projects, where weather proofing is essential.

Super Thin Edge-Lit LED: The New VL

Mr. Chera then introduced us to the new VL that features an Edge Alignment Kit, Slim Bezel Design, and Advance Loopthrough Technology for seamless video walls and digital menu boards. Providing 24/7 protection against content disasters, the VL is epuipped with USB Failover which maintains signage content on screen in the event of a media player failure. With an OPS Slot, USB Playback, and DisplayPort the VL offers advance connectivity with the next generation of display technology. Smart Control allows the user to remotely manage and control the display. With Smart Power, the backlight intensity can be controlled and pre-set by the system to reduce the power consumption by up to 40%, substantially saving on energy costs.

“Menu boards are becoming a huge segment of our market and of digital signage,” – Angad Chera, Marketing Manager, Philips Commercial Signage

When we asked Angad what he thought was the future of digital signage he replied, “It’s becoming an important segment overall within the restaurant industry, retail and now education. You’re starting to see it everywhere not just in airports and casinos. It’s becoming more affordable.” As far as advanced technology, he believes that there’s definitely an interest in having an IP-addressable commercial display and have it stream without a media player. “The new thing right now is IP signage,” says Chera.  “This technology has been available in the consumer world with smartTV, net TV… I think the next evolution to digital signage will be bringing that technology to the commercial display side. Points of failures would be decreased.

“All you would have to do with IP signage is hang your display, plug it in, connect to the internet and stream the content to the device,” – Angad Chera, Marketing Manager, Philips Commercial Signage

Android Signage Solutions

“Android is becoming a new trend in digital signage,” says Chera. Angad showed us Revel Digital’s small, form factor media players. “Compact and lightweight, it is cost-effective, affordable and robust with a solid-state hard-drive,” added Chera. It is now easier and more affordable for those at entry-level digital signage to enter the market.

Philips Commercial Signage, BrightSign, Flixio Studios, and Peerless-AV Created Entry Signage at DSE 2013

Digital Signage Expo (DSE) conference management selected BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage players to provide digital signage media players for the show’s entry display that greeted attendees as they entered the show floor. The all-star team assembled by the DSE included Flixio Studios who created rich content that BrightSign’s market leading solid-state players distributed to 13 Philips displays secured with Peerless-AV mounts. The mosaic-style installation covered an area of approximately 8 feet high by 16 feet wide, suspended 8 feet off the ground by giant columns on either side.
